Even though our body manufactures some vitamin D when exposed to sunshine, some northern countries receive such a weak amount of sunshine during the winter that taking a vitamin D supplement is a good idea.

Another recent study, appearing in the October 2012 issue of Arthritis Research and Therapy, reported that patients suffering from systemic lupus may get help from vitamin D. The researchers pointed to boosted levels of certain immune cells and lowering of others as the main benefit of vitamin D for those suffering from this autoimmune disease.
