In May of 2000, the Surgeon General issued the first ever report on oral health, titled “Oral Health In America.”
This was the 51st Surgeon General’s report issued since 1964, when Luther Terry issued his landmark report on
tobacco and health, and the findings of “Oral Health in America” could very well be just as important.
According to the report, millions
of Americans suffer
from untreated dental diseases,
amounting to what former
Surgeon General David Satcher
refers to as a “silent epidemic.”
While many people and dental
professionals have believed for
years that good oral health is
closely tied with good overall
health, the Surgeon General’s
Report really brought home the
importance of the issue. Oral
health can affect the overall health
of people from newborn children,
to the elderly. It turns out that bacteria
in the mouth influence many
systemic conditions, including
heart disease, low birth weight, and diabetes.
THE RIGHT REGIMEN
FOR ORAL HEALTH
The American Dental Association has continued to
recommend that people brush twice daily, floss
daily, and visit their dentist for regular check-ups;
however, they have also added a recommendation
that people use an antimicrobial mouth rinse to
reduce the bacterial count and inhibit bacterial
activity in dental plaque, which can cause gingivitis,
an early, reversible form of gum disease.
While gingivitis is not uncommon, it is important
to get it under control early. If allowed to go
unchecked, in can lead to tooth loss. The early
stage of gingivitis is marked by bacterial growth in
the plaque, which causes the gums to become
inflamed, and leads to discomfort and bleeding
during brushing and flossing.
If a person does not take the proper steps to
treat gingivitis, it can advance to periodontitis. In
this stage of gum disease, the inner layer of the
gum and bone pull away from the teeth and form
pockets. These pockets make the gums even more
vulnerable because debris can collect in these
areas and cause infection. At this point, bone and
tissue begin to break down in the affected areas.
This is caused by toxins from the bacteria, along
with the the body’s good enzymes, which are dispatched
to the area to fight infection. As the
destruction of bone and tissue progresses, it
becomes more difficult to reverse, and the teeth
can loosen and even fall out.
Something else to keep in mind, is that gum
disease can lead to larger problems throughout
the body. Numerous studies have linked gum disease
to heart disease; experts believe that bacteria
from the mouth, and chemicals created by
inflammation in the mouth, which enter the bloodstream,
can affect the heart.
Clearly, it is important for your oral health and
your overall wellness to take good care of your gums.
There are plenty of anti-microbial mouth rinses
on the market; however, the one that may offer the
benefits to your oral health will not be found among
the toothbrushes and floss at your local supermarket.
The antimicrobial mouth rinse that truly shines
is silver hydrosol.
Silver stops infectious microbes in their tracks,
including bacteria commonly found in the mouth.
While it has long been accepted that silver is effective
in fighting a range of microbes including bacteria,
viruses and fungus, it has only been in
relatively recent years that researchers have begun
to understand exactly how silver works against
these infectious agents. It all comes down to the
action of the silver ions, which work against
microbes in a number of ways. Silver ions will rupture
the outer membranes of infectious microbes;
they can attack the oxygen-metabolizing enzymes
and essentially suffocate the microbes; and they
can attack a microbe’s most important and vulnerable
But silver’s benefits go beyond its antimicrobial
properties. In addition to effectively eliminating
pathogens, it can actually help to heal infected and
Silver has been observed to have anti-inflammatory
properties that can start working on
inflamed tissue upon contact. In a 2005 study using
nanocrystalline silver, the research team discovered
that the anti-inflammatory properties come
into play as silver suppresses the expression of
cytokines TNF-alpha and IL-12, thereby inducing
apoptosis of inflammatory cells.
In in vitro and in vivo studies spanning two
decades, Dr. Robert O. Becker found that silver ions
actually help to regenerate tissue. In studies using silver
as an antimicrobial for wound healing, Dr. Becker
observed a very positive side effect: silver actually
spurred significant growth stimulation in damaged
tissues, accelerating healthy tissue recovery.
Many mouth rinses claim to do double-duty by
preventing gingivitis and bad breath; what they don’t
tell you is that these are both related to bacteria in the
mouth! There are also forms of gingivitis that actually
emanate from abnormal bacteria growth in the stomach,
where silver is also beneficial. If you want a
mouth rinse that truly does double-duty, try silver
hydrosol. It will combat bacteria (and in turn gingivitis
and bad breath), while stopping inflammation, and
helping to repair tissues that may have already been
damaged by gum disease! It is hands-down, the best
way to restore and maintain your oral health.
Silver hydrosol is a very gentle and easy to use
rinse for people of all ages. Unlike other leading
mouth rinses that are so strong with flavoring and
alcohol that they can be downright uncomfortable
to use, silver hydrosol tastes and feels like pure,
GOOD FOR YOUR GUMS,
Silver’s healing properties can be beneficial for
many issues occurring in the mouth. People who
suffer from frequent canker sores can use silver to
help reduce the inflammation and to encourage
healing. For anyone who has had a root canal or
other serious dental procedures, the regenerative
and antimicrobial properties in silver hydrosol combine
to provide excellent healing potential.
